THE MAPLES ARE BEGINNING TO TURN

THE MAPLES ARE BEGINNING TO TURN

The maples are beginning to turn.

Red orange yellow green.

Same order of colours

as a rainbow or a sunset

looking from the outside toward the trunk.

New England asters chicory loosestrife

and the last of the waterlilies blooming late.

A good place to paint beside the lake.

I can see for miles.

My easel doesn’t know

if it’s a bridge or a gate

but it unfolds like a giant insect

a praying mantis

with the wing of a white butterfly in its mandibles

like a primed canvas

ready to reflect the expression

of my interpretation of the world

as it is and isn’t.

Hunting magic.

I smear red ochre on my skin.

I spit-paint my hand in stars against the sky.

Every artist is trying to make a deal with the world

whereby he will say the world was here

if it will say that he was.

But the world’s got a wild card up its sleeve

and all I’ve got is a canvas.

The mind is an artist.

Able to paint the worlds.

Right now it’s dabbing fireflies

like little green lanterns seen through the trees

that can’t keep secrets to themselves.

If the stars give birth to myths.

Then the fireflies like to gossip.

Five petals open.

One flower blooms.

Advaitistic.

The one in the many.

The many in the one.

I spot a waterlily like a lone swan

unfolding its feathers like crescent moons

to attain enlightenment

and take flight into the night beyond.

It doesn’t mean to be beautiful.

It’s a third eye with myriad eyelids

all opening at the same time

like a thought-moment

in the mystery of nothing

like a drop of water

a tear of the moon

that fell like rain

and made a big splash on earth

with the compassionate clarity of its original insight

that the world’s not here

just for us to make things up about it

that might or might not be true

to one only lonely view of the way it is.

Thirteen ways of looking at a blackbird.

I add some carbon black to some pthalo blue

with a touch of titanium white

to suggest the gengenshein on the horizon

like the glow of stray light

that’s gathered for the night

like many destinations around the same fire

nestled in the dark hills somewhere out of sight

and the sky that flows off my brush

over the edge of the known world

like a wave coming ashore

captures my likeness

in the vastness of its own starless darkness

as if neither of us had a sign we were born under.

The idiots think I’m painting a landscape.

But a birch isn’t a birch

when you see it inside out

like the Huron who roamed these woods

three hundred years ago.

Like the silence that moves the music

it’s not enough just to paint what’s there

you got to paint what you can’t see as well.

You’ve got to cast a spell over the image

like Orpheus in hell

to bring it back up into the light

out of the dead

without ever looking back

to see if you’re being followed.

You’ve got to paint the flower

as if you had a view

of what the seed sees.

Sometimes you’ve got to put your eyes out

like blind water tapping its way along with a witching-stick

to find out what’s going on underground with the star-nosed moles.

When the rug gets pulled out from under you

by a sudden gust of wind

like the flying carpet of your canvas

and the reflection of your easel

is walking on water and stars

like a long-legged spider on stilts

trying to connect the dots

of a new constellation

like a dream-catcher

with a predatory history of lucid webs

it’s still got more feet than you to stand on

if you’re still looking at quicksand like a cornerstone.

I see Venus shining in the peacock green of the western sky

and my eyes shatter like chandeliers in an earthquake

trying to feel the fractures in her light

as if the brushes in my hand were the antennae

of the curious ant that looks up at her from so far down below

he can only imagine what she looks like in the darkness

behind the mirrors she breaks every night.

My guess is that she’s an enlightened waterlily

full of lucid nectar

that offers herself up

like a goblet of tantric delight

to those with enough crazy wisdom

to drink from her eyes

as if they’d just fallen in love with their own seeing.

Picture-music.

Ra ta ta tat.

A divine madness.

Creative rapture

in the way things pass away.

The fox stands guard

over the hole in the magician’s hat

waiting for a white rabbit

that hasn’t been seen for years.

But it isn’t nineteen sixty-six on the West Coast

it’s moonrise over Devil’s Lake

two thousand and ten

and I’m mixing ochre and alizarin crimson

to simulate the ripe lunar orange

of the maculate moon disc

before it shrinks through yellow into white at zenith

like the head of John the Baptist

still preaching to Salome

about the dangers of dancing.

But the light keeps whispering things to me

like fingerprints left at the scene of a crime

where just to be a witness

were a sin of omission

like the Holy Ghost without a corpse

or a lawyer.

Like a star not being

where it says it was

by the time its light arrived

I let the next insight

try to express me

as I was

knowing I’ve already changed

time back into space

and it may be my likeness

but it’s not my face.

The wolf in winter

noses around the cattails for muskrat.

But it won’t be until tomorrow that I learn that.

Now I paint a tree

like a torch that went out in the water.

I paint a cedar as if I were the fire in its roots.

I breathe in the rich night air of earth

and let it deepen my blood in the darkness

until it hurts like the mystery

in the wounded heart of things

that have sacrificed everything

just to exist as they are

as they do

in their silence and beauty

without realizing anyone else is here.

Everything struggling to live

as if it were crammed into the last lifeboat

or barely hanging on to the sides

like heavy earrings on overloaded ear-lobes.

The towers of the staghorn sumac

taste like lemon-flavoured couches

and the pine cones go Zen in the fall

and drop like pagodas and samuri

shedding samaras of armour

all over the ground of their being.

But there’s a subtlety in their surrender

that not even the genius of the lake is aware of.

The fruits of the earth are proof enough

we can make it on our own

along with all these others

who’ve found the way to keep going on

is to open your hand

like a map to a big country

with amazing rivers and lifelines

and give it all away

like the leaves and the trees.

The gift of a gift of a gift of a gift

that goes looking for the giver

it creates in the image of itself

to say thank-you to something

it recognizes in itself

like the sea in the heart of a river.

How rare and precious life is.

What a singularity of awareness

so inconceivable

it creates atoms and stars spontaneously

out of the inexhaustibility of nothingness

and elaborates them into a dynastic conciousness

so that everything that lives

and everything lives

is the cognate and nabob

the subject and object

of a multiversal intelligence

that pervades the abyss of the unknown

like a lake looking up at the stars

that can detect their shining inside it

like fires it can’t put out.

The fish are swimming through the treetops.

The birds are flying through the roots.

I want the waterlilies to understand me

when I paint them

like poems and moonboats

and float them down the mindstream

singing merrily merrily merrily merrily

life is but a dream.

Looking for the way things are

behind the way they seem

is the act of a fool

trying to peel the moon’s reflection

off the surface of the water

to see if it leaves a hole.

The donkey looks into the well.

The well looks back at the donkey.

Which of the two is enlightened?

I’m doing surgery on the rocks

with a painting knife

I can parry and thrust like Zorro.

I bleed them like iron

and scar them like gold

and leave them to dry until tomorrow

when I hope they’ll like the way

the light shines out of them

and not down upon them

the way it does when things get old.

In a world where appearance smiles

and reality frowns

which of the two

is less of a clown

than the other?

The one who turns the painting over

and sees a wall

or the one who sees

the body of the world

under the painterly scab

that’s done its bit to heal it?

And I remember what a desert told me once

looking up at the stars

like a phantom of water

in a hareem of mirages

musing out loud in the distance

like the sand and the wind.

Be kind to your delusions.

In a world where reality

is everything you’re not.

They’re all you’ve got.

You can pull yourself up by the bootstraps

into a pyramid with a future

that feels like an afterlife

or you can lie around all day like sand

contemplating the universe

in every grain of your being

as if you were the light

and it were the seeing

and there were something just out of sight

you were trying to understand

like waterlilies at night.

But either way.

It’s hard to meet a pyramid

that doesn’t feel as insecure as quicksand

waiting like an hourglass

for miraculous mirages in the deserts of time

to fill it up to the brim again

with hallucinations of dreamwater

that can revive the dead like rain on a dry rock.

I paint the moon.

It’s getting late.

I see a calendar

that sheds its eyelids

like a thick white rose of wet paint

and a young girl on the far side of the lake

glowing through her skin

like moonlight through the mist on the water.

Every month she clips

the crescents of her toenails

like the relics of a dead saint.

Apparitions of matter!

A heron and an otter

and the smoke of the Milky Way

rising over the distant hills from a warm fire

that’s making up stories about the stars

that everyone can believe in for awhile

like the blue in the distance of an aloof smile

that keeps things in aerial perspective.

I paint time as if it had a home.

I paint space as if it weren’t alone.

I paint the lilies like waterstars

that grew out of the seeds

of their own reflections

sown by the constellations overhead

that are following the plough of the moon like birds.

I paint the fishbone skeletons of the turning trees like words

that have never been said before

and won’t be ever again.

Red yellow white black

I paint the scream in the skull of the moon.

I paint the pain in her eyes

that trepasses against

the conciousness of why.

The visual is the ore of the vision

that weeps long rivers of gold deep inside

when it’s fired up in the furnaces of the imagination.

Water and wave.

Darkness and light.

There’s no division.

The image is the bright pupil

that goes to school

to become an educated symbol

in the long dark halls of homesick experience.

This is seeing not only with the eye

but through it

as Blake suggested we do.

This is painting roots on your flowers.

This is how you can hear the colour red

and see the silver threads of the nightmusic

the spiders play to themselves

on the guitars of their webs

when there’s nothing left to catch but the dew.

Painting is the discipline

of learning how to cry in harmony

with the tears deep down in things

lachrymae rerum

when they realize

just how sad and beautiful it is to exist.

I paint the light in the limitless eyes

that are all wired in series

like grapes on the wild vine

of the one seeing.

I paint the warring rainbows

in the lies of the stars

like promises that haven’t been kept yet.

I paint the ghostly blue aura

of all those that have ever wished upon them

as if there were a whole new atmosphere

born of every smudge of breath

that dissipates like death

on the cool night air.

I paint the gusts of stars

that rise from the winged heels of the messengers

and then I sweep them off the stairs

with the broom of my brush

and I’m back to square one

of staring at the canvas

like a dead sail on the equator

of a planet I’ll finish painting later

when the wind takes me by surprise

and Isis tatoos a star on the palm of my hand

like the true lifelines of a sailor

to keep me from drowning

in the infinite midnight blue of her eyes

like a wavelength of light

that made it through her veils

like Osiris through the eye of a needle.

Oudeis aneile peplon.

Declination is latitude.

On the other side of my eyes.

Sometimes the stars take direction from me.

I paint the fleets of the lilies

with skulls and cross-bones on their sails.

I paint them like loveletters to the stars

that keep reading them over and over again

like earthbound constellations far from home.

As above.

So below.

I paint the world

as if it didn’t have a return address

I could send it back to

like a mirror

of what became of it

in my hands.

The mind may be an artist.

Able to paint the worlds.

But the worlds too are artists

able to paint the mind.

Nur wa nur.

Light upon light.

Not black and white.

I look behind me

and there’s a tree painting me painting a tree.

The world labours at being a mind

that can see the world.

The flower is red.

The grass is green.

The secrets give birth to cosmic ears

listening for signs of life among the stars

to reveal their self-portraits painted in light-years.

All worlds are the work of the mind that beholds them.

The future shifts toward the blue.

The past is infra-red.

You mix the two

and you can see

the violet auras of the dead

in this year’s New England asters.

I paint what is eventual

about the potential of awareness.

I paint a crow

like the dark side of my mind

crossing the moon on my easel

like an eclipse of black paint

and I leave the work unsigned.

I stare mindlessly into the night

and see the colours of dark matter

shining like the eyes

of our original watershed.

I see the irridesence

of the rainbow at midnight

and paint an auroral peacock feather

like the Northern Lights

smeared by a fan-blender across space.

I peek through the cracks in the rocks

like the lines that run

like the fossils of rivers

from the headwaters

of the eyes in my face.

Painting is the visible shape I give

to the invisible disciple

of the way I cry

from the outside in

like a cloud circling the world mountain

in a high wind

when no one is listening.

I’m a two-way mirror

with the instincts of a window

and the spiritual life of an autumn sky.

You can tell by the ashes

where the fire’s been.

You can smell the colours

of what the pines have seen.

You can write a book

on the meaning of green

but you still won’t exhaust

the myriad shades

of its infinite sorrows

or capture the deathless hopes

of its breathless tomorrows

rising like ghosts of smoke

from the candleabra of the trees

that burn more like prophets

standing up in their fires unconsumed

than corpses laid prone

on their funeral pyres

like the rafters of an ancient house

that’s doomed.

Rembrandt’s mystic brown

of rich ferrous earth

and spent leaves

withers into history.

Now space is the colour of mystery

deep blue black

with a touch of deadly nightshade.

There’s more of the infinite in the colour

than what’s up close and intimate.

Things go off into it and never come back.

There are no gates on it

and if it’s got doors

no one’s ever stepped through before

they’re always wide open.

Billions of galaxies.

Billions beyond billions of stars.

And still it’s only a fraction of a value lighter

than it was before

the universe picked up a brush

and learned to paint

a lighthouse with no one to warn.

A fish jumps out of the lake

at a low-flying dragonfly.

You can paint the whole universe

in one little dot of radiant white

in the highlight on your third eye

and it would be a perfect likeness

of Isis behind her veils

that no one’s ever lifted

of Brahman sitting on his lotus

dreaming the world awake

of Buddha under the Bodhi Tree

catching sight of the morning star

of Moses shaking like a mountain

under the weight of his own commandments

of Muhammad embraced in the cave of Hira

by the angel Gabriel

two bow-lengths of revelation away

at the centre of the circle

of Jesus kissing Mary Magdalene

to turn his flesh and blood into a rose

after all the loaves and fishs

after all the bread and wine

of the Great Spirit that lives

like water in the woods

like light in a dream

and whispers

in a voice that’s as clear your eye

that every blade of grass

that springs from its roots in the dirt

like the birth of the living word

at the foot of the lightning-struck pine

where the crows roost for the night

among the empty herons’ nests

is a line of holy scripture

in the mother-tongue of the earth.

Of Einstein proving energy

is the flipside of matter

and there are relative limits

to the absolutes of lucidity.

Or as Dogen Zenji said

When the truth doesn’t fill

your body and mind

you always feel you’ve had enough.

When the truth does fill

your body and mind

you always feel that something’s missing.

If Einstein had been more of a painter

or listened more closely

to the reckless picture-music

of his own violin

like the little suggestive waves

that are raised

when the wind barely breathes

on the skin of the water

he would have understood

you can no more leave chaos

out of your unified field theory

than you can leave nature out of the woods

or a painter out of a landscape.

Thought’s faster than light.

Feeling’s deeper than night.

The black mirror’s brighter than the white one.

I’m painting a paper birch

like a white angel

that drowned in the lake

like the moon without a church for a headstone.

YOU'RE SITTING FULL LOTUS

YOU’RE SITTING FULL LOTUS

You’re sitting full-lotus in the middle of an asylum floor with a straitjacket on and duct-tape over your mouth and six kinds of meds working like Merlin and Morgana La Fey over a cauldron on the nightshift of your gut to turn you back into a princess and you’re trying to convince me that the world hasn’t gone mad.

I say you can put hatred in a suit and prop it up in front of a tv camera and it will still reek drool and fester as it always does. I won’t say it’s the end of Western civilization. There are enough chicken-littles running around like Nostradamus and the Mayan calendar for that. Civilization’s the kind of karma that arises from the ground of everything it walks on like other people. Whether you’re an Iraqi or an Aztec. Sunni Shia or Mexican drug cartel. Your head’s off. Civilization’s a serial killer that covers its tracks with an endless internal investigation it’s always doing on itself like an autopsy to see what went forensically wrong. And the one enduring cornerstone of hell that it keeps being rebuilt on is the fact that it never comes to an end. It looks to the future like a prophetic skull.

You can organize rabies into a political party and run xenophobic mutants for candidates and encourage your hatred to speak up in front of a lonely daffodil of a microphone on an elevated platform overlooking the crowd that’s as anxious as a church to get on with burning the Koran. Savanorola in Medicean Florence cooking in the Bonfire of the Vanities he lit to burn the Renaissance like a painting by Botticelli in the righteous wrath of a God without an eye for beauty. The fanatical apocalyptic Puritans who were driven out of England by the restoration to burn women’s bodies in Salem are trying to start a new crusade with the Saracens to bleed people like meat until they’re either kosher or halal just the way God likes his tenderloins done well. It’s a pity we ever gave up worshipping the moon. You couldn’t stand up in the streets of the Jerusalem of 1094 without slipping on the blood and the gore of those slaughtered by wardogs ravening like Christians in God’s Holy Abbatoir. Humans justify themselves to God with acts of ineffable carnage. God keeps his distance to avoid the smell of us on his breath. The moon sheds its skin like a Pythian priestess quoting scripture from a snakepit. The moon took one look and the Medusa turned to stone. Her eyes froze like holy water in an ice age when she learned what we had learned to do with fire rock and bone.

Now every kind of hominid’s got an opinion of its own it cherishes like a golden maggot it swears is going to turn into a butterfly if it can wrap itself up in the flag like the corpse of a worm in a chrysalis of cash. Adulterous polyglots of power espousing murderous family values get caught going down on a hooker like a rich man’s brat as their poor long-suffering apologetic wives stand beside them when the shit hits the camera feeling as if their womanhood had just been turned into some kind of backroom political uncle. Twenty-five million children dying a year on the planet from starvation and the news of the day is where this pathetic hypocrite sticks his dick. The real politik of a sleazy hick. The same dung in the corner of the yard under the acid snow of the righteous the crocuses bloom in like the gynophobic cardinals of sin who like to fuck children at confession. Diocese after diocese. Suffer the little children to come unto me like pages in the White House or a male escort service on Craigslist. The ferocious impotence of purity sacrifices the innocence of our children to the homicidally obscene telling them they’ll be forgiven for the original sin of Eve if only they’ve got the stomach to believe everyone’s rotten to begin with. The spitting cobras of the Taliban splash acid in a schoolgirl’s eyes like the writing on the wall she was learning to read. They did the same in Salem. They burned women. They shared the same death-wish.

And the Inquisition’s on the way to root out the weeds from the flowers of the flesh as if a true holy life weren’t the conversion of heaven to what’s earthly about us but a kind of psycopathic espionage conducted by diddlers and ideologues who look at things like terrorists who delight in the divine meaning of their work. The accusation takes the tail of the confession in its mouth and things are balanced out eternally like a perpetual motion machine that’s gone green. But it’s neither crucial nor irrelevant that you understand this. The new memes of spiritual life have perfected the aim of our old genetic evolution in a game of hit and miss and the angels are bungi jumping from paradise like black ops hashashim with a hit list sliding down from gunship helicopters like commas and caterpillars. Corruption insists on the crystalline structure of perfection. We’re looking through a dark glass digitally to see if there’s anything virtuous about virtual reality. Wolves with shepherd’s crooks. Surrealistic blobs of life pouring honey over our heads like Dalfiesque gobs of time over the latest war-crime. Blood washed off with blood. The angels keep their ancient places. Turn but a stone and start a wing. But two world wars and and the surfeited indifference of glutted spiders to the flies that have the guts to be the last to look into the eyes of the countless genocides that hang from the trophy-lines of our dreamcatching webs and the larks aren’t singing anymore. And even Babylon is appalled by the Whore that makes quick work of the world like a sexually transmitted infection that gives immunity to anyone who isn’t wearing a condom but takes things on faith that it will later blame on love. The polyglot evangels of a humanistic vision  are the impossible knots in the heartwood of the tongue-tied. Freedom of speech isn’t a choice. It’s a decision. Three monkeys and they’ve all got their fingers up to their lips like the streetgangs of L.A. Revolution advances its chances of a takeover by storming the lottery that made the occasional poor man rich by selling hope to the people like the odd man out with three strikes against him even before he takes his first swing trying out for a baseball team like a chunk of coal with the manifest destiny of the diamond that cuts him from the roster like an unwanted part. The eyelids of the roses are covered in worms. Religion’s a hail mary pass in the playbook of God trying to win a place on the cheerleading squad before the two minute warning of the last quarter. Life’s a wonderful wife coming to terms with her disappointment like something Cambrian in the Burgess Shales that came to a dead end. The morning star goes down like Venus on Franz Kafka under the golden apples of the Hesperides and wakes up shining sublimely like Lucifer exalting in the heresies that have ignited the fires of his eventual martyrdom. God may be dead. But hell marches on like a cliche of time that ignores the fact that it too is the dead metaphor of an enlightened superstition that crept like the shadows of monsters under the door of our childhood delusion. The dead are legislating for the living. They shed us like old taboos of skin to dance nude in the moonlight free of the club-footed bodies that clung to them like wallflowers of dust that were never asked because they weren’t very beautiful. And do not want to be reborn as us. To see clearly in the twenty-first century is just another way of distorting the madness. Eyes have evolved into warped mirrors in a house of horrors up close and intimate as a finger on the trigger of the G-spot of the orgasmic atrocities that keep playing Russian roulette with everyone on the planet as if the gun wasn’t as fully loaded as a casino on a run of bad luck. Who gives a fuck gets said like a new novina in the mouth of an insincere cynic and everyone’s doing unto others before it gets done unto them. And something calling itself love is looking for a loyal hooker like a Virgin Mary Magdalene who matriculated from an immaculate conception like a Catholic girl at a private school that teachs up to date creationism like the divine agenda behind the evil of evolution that led to us just as we are here today at the top of the foodchain trying hard not to look down like the only way left to go.

A great night sea of madness and you’re on a little raft of sanity you’ve patched together like the punchline of an old joke to get to the other side of your homelessness. You’re a window that lies to itself about what it sees. You sit by your mirrors and wait for high tide to rise like the moon. You speak of providence. And then you drown. You let go of your sanity as if your madness were the only thing left you had to hang on to. You close your eyes and think you’re walking on the dark side. And I haven’t got the heart to tell you that even your madness will turn out to be just another old friend who forgot all about you. It’s that empty there’s nothing to it. Not a star. Not an eye. Not a firefly. Not a bolt of lightning can see through it. Parts of God she left out of the creation of the world. Faces she turned away from herself like the wind in the orchard scattering the blossoms of those she turned down. By their fruits ye shall know them. And yours are the dark abundance of this sudden windfall all over the ground as if you’d finally given in to gravity and let go of the solar system. I can read your thoughts like lines on the palms of your hands. You see a starmap of dead ends in an obsolete zodiac. I see water on Mars and the moon flowing like rivers that bear your name like the very first to see them. And it’s kind of funny to think about an explorer who’s worried about getting lost on her way into the unknown without directions. Like a star that doesn’t know where one constellation ends and another begins until someone looks at it from the inside. The way the sea keeps an eye on the weather. And the moon keeps winking.

MYSTERIOUS THE BODY

MYSTERIOUS THE BODY

Mysterious the body

these fingers lips eyes skin

this finite that encloses

this infinite within.

The shape of the universe

is the shape of a human.

It flows from the inside out

and the outside in.

A bag of water

with nine holes in it

leaking like the moon.

I live in it like a fish in the sea

swimming through myself alone.

A fish is water being life.

A bird is sky being life.

My body is the earth walking upright

as the grasslands replace the trees like clothes.

I can hold my life and my death

in my own two hands

and when I let go I can breathe through my nose.

Bags between my legs

bags for lungs

a bag for a stomach

is it any wonder

I’m a hunter-gatherer?

A mouth like the entrance

to the underworld

I’m all caves and underground tunnels

a blind star-nosed mole among dark roots

trying to show me the way up to the flowers

by guiding me like water

toward the light.

In my eyes

room for the world.

In my ears

the voice of thunder

the roar of excruciating nightseas

that pull the dragons under.

The abyss speaks

and I can hear it

smell it

touch it

taste it

shape it into a world

I’m making up as a I go along

for company

like a verb with a noun.

Not a subject with an object.

Seeing the eye.

Hearing the ear.

Tasting the tongue.

Smelling the nose.

Touching the skin.

Thinking the mind

if you’re a Buddhist

with a sixth sense.

I look at myself in this body

to see who I might be

and it comes to me like a universe

that abounds with origins

I am a nothing

that just happened to begin.

My senses are an ancient alphabet

buried in the stars.

A hieroglyph written in the sand

by a viper of water

only the wind can understand.

And what’s a mind

if not a Rosetta stone

in an infinite number of voices

that are all my mother-tongue

improvising lullabies

to keep the shadows back?

Humility demands

I approach the universe like an effect

and so I do

but I’m also possessed

of a demonic intelligence

that walks right up to it like a cause

that keeps breaking its own laws in jest.

Maybe your body’s the host.

Maybe your mind’s the guest.

You can bow on either side of the threshold.

You can enter the palace with grace.

You can blunder in like a buffoon.

But there’s no end of the dimensions

to the negative reflections

in the black mirrors of space

that stared out into the emptiness long enough

for the light shining down on the starmud

to turn into the eyes in your face

like a planet slowly evolving an atmosphere

that could see life at the end of the tunnel.

Our genes have found a kind of material immortality

that allows them to inherit themselves

like water and apple-trees.

Who needs to teach chaos theory to the bees

or preach paradise to the flowers?

Maybe the body’s a journey that walks through itself

like the heart follows its bloodstream

like a river out of Eden

with one shoe on and one shoe off

just to keep things balanced

between what is kept

and what is lost

but step by step

pulse by pulse

breath by breath

things pass away into a new start.

Yesterday goes to bed

and wakes up like the future of now.

Or maybe the body’s a vehicle

that knows where we’re going

even if we don’t.

Maybe it’s got destinations

and rendezvous of its own

and we’ve just come along for the ride?

Or we’re riding shotgun on an old stage coach

urgently trying to get home before sundown

with all our passengers alive?

I might be the nightwatchman

but I’m not the foreman

on the nightshift of my cells.

I’m amazed at how much goes on without me

when I hold a lantern up to

what seems to be dreaming me

as if the darkness had windows

I could see through

to see what I’m up to

this far beyond the light.

I feel I’m hollow inside

though I know

how densely packed I am for the ride

all the essential organs

in saddle-bags at the back of a Harley

that isn’t stopping to ask for directions.

Mysterious the body is

and just as the mind makes a point of thought

when it’s trying to be serious

the body can make a comic farce of pain

or a Greek tragedy of pleasure

trying to gouge its eyes out

when it wants your attention.

It’s always the old scar

and I’m always the new wound

sitting like a valley at the foot of the mountain

that knows how to heal the self-afflicted

who keep falling on their swords within

to stay true to their words on the outside

but even that old argument’s wearing a little thin

because it’s just wearing your skin inside out

so people will think you’re honest

if you reveal everything

down to what you last ate

at your last supper.

The bread and fish of a poor messiah.

Or the poisoned mushrooms of a Roman emperor.

The body is a Druid

sacrificing itself

in the peat bogs of Yorkshire

to keep itself fertile and yielding.

A cult of flesh erects a temple of bone

and dedicates its resurrection to the gods.

My body’s an empire of sentient life-forms

that keeps losing legions in the Teutoberg Forest

to the barbarians at its borders

defending their ancestral homelands.

War always has two eyes open

until peace closes them both

in a dream fit for a human.

The mind may summon the body to a meeting

to discuss the day’s events

but it’s the body that sets the agenda

that removes the presidents

as if J.F.K. and Jimmy Hoffa

just disappeared

for lack of evidence.

Poor body.

Poor old shoe.

How many roads have we walked

all these years

all these miles

and never traveled any further than the distance

from our heels to our toes?

What a long way we had to go

to find out we never left.

What goes out the front door

comes in through the back

like a universe

that’s locked itself out of the house.

Light inside.

Light outside.

But the body

they must share to see

what’s revealed

by their lucidity

is the same window

that looks through them.

Once you stop approaching things like a key

to your own house

you lost somewhere in the grass

things will stop shutting you out

like a thousand unopened locks.

The body’s a walled city with nine gates

that are always open.

Who needs to knock

on either side of the door?

The body’s an old cave dweller

that paints its dead red

and buries them under the fires of life

as if the past had a future.

A meat-eater opens a theatre

and the prey’s been running ever since.

The mind is an artist.

Able to paint the worlds.

In blood.

In the six colours of the senses

and a seventh that no one’s ever seen.

There’s a perspective of meaning

that establishes the foreground

of an intimate identity

you suppose is yours.

The hot poppy of blood

under your nose

that keeps burning out

like a torch in the cold blues

of the veteran distances

that carry the dead and wounded on their backs

like broken doors that never had a home.

You begin

with a thought

in your mother’s mind

the wayward nudging of a distant notion

like the wings of a tiny insect

trapped in the hair of her arm

fluttering against her skin so gently

she frees it from its plight with a breath

that sways it into being

like the plaything of circumstance.

One thought-moment is the birth of eternity.

You grow a body from the seed

of last year’s flower.

You take it as a sign

that you exist.

You wear it like a spacesuit

on an alien planet

that is so lifeless

it has to import its fossils.

You fill your lungs

with a sky you brought from home.

And what’s a highly evolved brain

but a hunch of starmud

taking a good guess

at what’s ahead

and how it got here in the first place?

Look at all the stars sent out

like doves in a dark flood

to look for land

to look for a tree their light could perch in

that are never coming back.

Your body is the cornerstone of your solitude

in a vast space

that hasn’t finished preparing the ground yet.

Your body may be rooted in the soil

but the original bread of life is light.

Light seeds the worlds

with time and space

in such a way

the future is hindsight

and memory’s a prophecy of what’s to come.

After the harvest

the light sits down with everyone

and breaks bread with the dead like matter.

The body a satyr.

The body a buddha.

The body the Mad Hatter.

The body the ruse

of a crazy wisdom

that dupes it into enlightenment

like a cedar

a star

a waterlily

that flowers out of its own root-fires

like the illuminated sage

of a billion dark desires

burning like the energy of dark matter to be

clarity life lucidity

nur wa nur

light upon light.

The being in the light by which we see.

The body a koan of flesh

that liberates the mind

like a cosmic fortune-cookie

full of emptiness and silence

as if the sea were missing

when you put it up to your ear

to listen to the ocean of your own awareness.

The body the history of food.

The body the psychology of matter.

The body the hysterical mystery of sex.

The body abused and broken.

Driven out like Quasimodo

swinging from the bells of Notre Dame

or Caliban enslaved by Prospero

to do his bidding on demand

as if one hand were wrong

and the other were right.

The body may be dark

but the root isn’t ignorant of the light

and the blossom isn’t afraid of the night

and there’s no original sin

waiting in a garden of delight

like the seeds of damnation.

The mind is crammed with two of every kind.

The body is the ark

that carries them across

the deluge of their own blood

to be scuttled on a mountaintop in Turkey.

And when they die.

The hunter.

Food for the birds.

An offering to the sky.

The farmer.

A seed in the ground.

A tribute to the recurring earth.

We’re divided more by life

than we are by death.

Many atmospheres.

One breath.

Fire is the flag

of a small country

that lives with its shadows in fear

there’s no place for it among the stars

it disappears into

but the body is an empire

walking on water

and in every one of its tears

you can see the sun rise

and the moon set

over a vast night ocean

no one’s crossed yet.
