A CREED FOR THE DESPARATE

A CREED FOR THE DESPERATE

Don’t let your bones be softened by fear.

By the time you hear it the lightning has already struck.

Don’t listen for the echoes of things you haven’t said.

And stop breaking your fortune-cookie skull open

like an old prophetic head

that claims it’s been to the dark side

without being dead.

Don’t let disaster define you.

You’re not the bouquet

of a second class vinegar

hovering over a first class wine.

No crisis ever comes with its own identity

until you give it yours.

Move calmly over your own waters

like clouds in the eye of a puddle.

Walk as if you were already

following your own funeral

and lost your way to the grave.

People make much of being

but seeing is enough

to save you sometimes

from your own obscurity.

And when was there ever any security

in security

as if this flame were safer than that?

How long has the universe risked being you?

Take a chance on your own magic

and pull your life like a tiger

out of your own hat

to eat the rabbit you’ve become.

Then there’s nothing to run from.

Become the sword

and you won’t cut yourself.

Become the fire

and you won’t burn.

Become life again

and you won’t pass away

breath after breath after breath

wishing you could stay

in the negative space

of a comfortable death

that eulogizes your lies.

There are full moons

that don’t weigh

like pennies on your eyes

to keep you from seeing too much.

And there are things of the earth

that have followed you into exile

like a new birth of things you can touch

that are wholly yours in passing

like music from a keyboard

or a fire in church.

And you may be down

to your last black beatitude

and righteously uphold the sanctity

of your will not to listen

to anything but the clinking of your own chains

and the mournful whistle

of your distant dying derailed thought-trains

giving up the ghost

but you’re just sucking on the tit

of a perverse purity

and you’re milking it

like the bitter truth

for all it’s worth.

And it’s not worth much.

And you may have flattened

all the mountains

and filled all the valleys

of your flatlining event horizons

but there’s still life going on

in the crooked backalleys

of secret dimensions

you don’t know about

stuck in the house all day

like a child afraid to go out.

You look at a tree.

You see a crutch.

You look at the moon.

You see a scar.

You look at a star

and you’re lost for good wherever you are.

And it’s not really a dysfunction of your imagination

that you can look at the Taj Mahal

and see a one-room hovel with slumlords

jacking up the rent.

It’s good to look both ways

at any spiritual crossing.

But you see a stick in the water

and you think the water’s bent.

And to shrink anything as the Tao says

you must first expand it.

But I think the Tao meant the universe

not a used condom on the death’s-head

of a stillborn resurrection.

But you’d have to fall

further than you have

to understand it.

You’d have to fall

from your present plight on the world mountain

all the way down until you came to a space

where there were no more opposites in the abyss

and nothing in order

nothing amiss

nothing is meant

to scare you into being

and nothing is trying to hold you back.

What’s your lover’s mouth

if not a wound

you can kiss into healing?

You can see it that way.

Or you can harden the bruised fruit

with brittle tears

and flintknap chandeliers

to fall from star-crossed mirrors

like rain from broken glass

that hasn’t fired up a single root in years

to dream of flowers.

The mind’s an artist.

The painting’s yours.

A self portrait in the image of God

whom no one’s ever seen.

I see a black star in the bottom of a tulip

shining up at me

like the direction it took

to get to the other side.

You see a poisonous spider

like the leftover lees

of a flowerless wine

in the eye of a toxic goblet.

And you might raise it to your lips

like a lunar eclipse

but you never drink up.

And even when you do

it’s a bad guest in the house of life

that drinks from his own skull

like the grail of a grape on the vine

with one eye open

as if he trusted the wine

but not the cup.

You’re not the cure

that failed the ailing kingdom.

And you’re not the miracle

that got up and walked away

to spread the word like a bird at sea

that had just discovered a tree to perch in

you might have sinned as a crow

but now that you’ve been saved

you’re a carrier pigeon.

You can sit here all day if you want

like a buddha on his tatami mat

thinking bituminously

about burning enlightened diamonds

back into eyeless coal.

You can squat like a tree in rings of fat

smashing small thoughts

like eggs on the rocks

trying to read your fate

in their misfortune

like a chromosome

you hold in common

with all those who hate

having been born.

You can heap your afterbirth with scorn.

You can turn your eyes

into a pair of gravitational lenses

like dark matter

and wince at the stars

like cinders of light

that contradict your seeing.

And you wouldn’t be wrong

because you can see it that way too.

The same eye by which I see God

is the eye by which She sees me.

Two creative geniuses in one studio

painting each other in the nude.

And she shows you hers

and you show her yours

as she enflames your solitude

by not putting her name on it

though it’s a perfect likeness of you.

Your face warped into

a convoluted starless space

like the opening gala

of a staged extinction.

And your soul shrouded in lampblack

like a candle

that soils its own light

by putting on a deathmask of night

like a snakeoil salesman

selling skin to ghosts.

And there where your eyes used to be

two black holes

surrounded by random haloes of light

like lipstick on the mouths of star-nosed moles.

And look at that scar of red she’s used

to catch your ambiguous smile.

That’s the kind of genius

that leaves the asylum gate open for awhile

for everyone to get into your style

of imploding your eyes

like black dwarfs

with abstract depressionist astigmatism

as if gravity couldn’t dig a grave deep enough

or matter make a stone heavy enough

to put on your chest to keep you from rising again

or the gold of the moon in your mouth

ever prove true enough to pay the ferryman

to get you to the other side of nowhere

as if he knew somehow

you huffed life like a paint thinner

trying to escape the race a winner

by never crossing a starting line

that wasn’t already

a dark horse lamed by life behind you.

And he couldn’t be bothered with anyone

who would fix their own death

and lay a bet against everyone

their pain could outrun their compassion

and in the second heat

their bitterness the truth.

But if you want a way out

like an emergency door

I’ll let you in on a little secret.

Life doesn’t grow into death

and death isn’t waiting

to take your next breath.

And there’s an eye of liberation

in the darkest hurricane roses of despair

that frees the light like life enough to care

that all it falls upon alike

should see its own face everywhere

through a crack of black lightning

in the white mirror

where everything that appears

evaporates like a ghost off a lake

or cataracts from the eyes

of the orthodox

who couldn’t see straight enough

to thread their keys through their locks

like mystic heretics

to have known

the deepest wounds give birth

to the sweetest spears

that life has ever thrown

like light on a roadless night

or insight like a bird through the sky

that enters the sunset

like a planet following the sun

through the seven coloured doors

of the seven blind seers

who disappear in a vision of one clarity

with many more eyes

than there are lightning bolts and fireflies

whose age can be measured in light-years.

If a fraction of nothing is nothing.

Then a fraction of eternity

isn’t a brevity less than the eternal

and every fraction of anything is all.

There now that’s not too hard to follow.

The white face of the moon

veils the dark other you never see

because it’s all been timed to turn away.

The moon and its month are one day.

Things might be empty

but they’re not hollow.

And you’re free to go or stay.

DON'T WANT

DON’T WANT

Don’t want no twisted fucked-up agony of a relationship

tying all my lifestreams into Gordian knots

I keep thinking I’m slicing through

to stay true to the snakepit

yoked to this deathcart of a body

that prophecied one day I’ll rule the world

when in fact I’m only cutting my own throat

to prove to you again and again and again

I don’t want to

cross my heart and hope to die.

The cut worm may bless the plough

but that’s not the same as falling on your own sword

or slashing your wrists on the moon

or nicking small wounds in your flesh

to indulge your addiction to severance.

I don’t mind cutting the occasional birthcord

or parting the waters of the Red Sea now and then

to let the chosen ones

on their way to the promised land through

where we all drink milk and honey on the moon

as if it were flesh,

but I don’t want another affair

that aspires like a hawk of fire

to one mystical extreme of love

only to fall like a guillotine on the other.

The rarest orchids of sex

may well bloom in the shadow of an outhouse

according to the oxymoronic nature of things

but the real obscenity

is uprooting them like weeds.

I don’t want a relationship that bleeds

before it’s even wounded.

You can steal all you want from me

if you can’t accept it for free.

You can take the moon from my window

the star from my dark

the hot jewel

from the hand of my demon

the gates down from my hovel in heaven

and if it makes you happy that’s okay

because I don’t care how I’m given away

when I love someone.

I live in the Eocene of a dark abundance

at the beginning of things

and there are eras of space

between my thoughts

that are filled with strange unwitnessed stars

that keep mum about fate and fortune

and the legends of scars to come,

but I can still feel my lover’s eyes

even over all the long excruciating transformations

of the shapeshifting years between us

looking at them like a myth with chandeliers.

And the dead branch blossoms into butterflies.

And the wine takes the poison

out of the deadly nightshade of our bitter tears

and joy doesn’t taste the salt of reason in its wound.

A woman is the only window

I’ve ever seen God through

like a firefly caught in the hair of a willow

that puts the stars to shame

with every flash of light on earth

that blooms in the night of her name.

The clarity of the fool

is not lost upon the wise

but I don’t want to work my ass off

to put another woman through goddess school

to learn that not all her slaves

are masters she’s overthrown

and the tribute I lay on her temple stairs

is not the Greek horse of a tragic farce.

If I rub the lamp of her body

to free the geni inside

to grant all our wishes

that doesn’t mean

I’m just another cork

bobbing on a sea of Bhakti devotion

trying to stick it

to another message in a bottle for help.

I just want to come.

I don’t want to come to the rescue.

I’m looking for the sweet narcosis of that oblivion

that follows rapture

not another maritime disaster.

She can be doing laundry like Nausicaa

when I wash up on her shores

like some reject in the tide

or she can be the siren of the island

who’s got a father with boats and oars,

or she can be the queen of sacred whores

holding court in the temple of Isis

where the johns keep wondering

what the price is

to lift her veils

like black sails on the dark side of the moon

and kiss the enlightened eclipses of her eyelids

like the heads of holy snakes

without being bitten twice by the same vice,

and I won’t quarrel with any mask she makes of herself

even if it’s one of my own

because true love knows how

to go down on the Medusa

without turning into stone.

One breast kills

but the other heals

and there are no mirrors

in the way it feels to please her

when you know your way around.

She might wear the deathmask of the moon

but there’s always a nymph

in the heart of the crone

that doesn’t want to be on her own for the night.

And the less you look for her

the more she will appear

like a doe come down to the water to drink

the moon from her lone reflection

or a cougar moving from shadow to shadow

without detection.

Impotence is the holly

of aesthetic desecration,

a lot of negative space in a fist

trying to get even with its thorns

by stoning Mary Magdalene to death

because she was beautiful and free

but that’s just another halo

on the horn of obscenity

trying to gore a virgin on a unicorn.

A woman is not the mudflap of a big wheel.

She’s not the witch at the end of that candle

that keeps going out

like an eternal flame

in the morgue of a black mass

that keeps shapeshifting the blame

between a goat and a jackass

for its lack of horns and hooves.

Sex might cast its spells

over the wide-eyed realms of heaven

slumming in the nightclubs of hell

in the auroral lingerie of intense pleasure

but it isn’t trying to stick pins

through the heart

of a voodoo doll gone bad

to avenge her miserable sins.

It’s a bigger magic than that.

It doesn’t foul its own coasts

trying to sell skin to ghosts.

DRIVING THE SAME ROAD

DRIVING THE SAME ROAD

Driving the same road years later without you.

Looking at those things,

the boulder in the fork of the tree

like a giant slingshot

or the head of a baby

coming out backwards

between its mother’s legs,

all the endless explanations you had

for how and why things got here

now nothing but voiceless mutes in your absence.

But absence is too kind a word

to intimate the subtler death I feel

drawing its sharper knife across my jugular

like the Sanskrit word for conciousness

as if severance were the compassionate side of vacancy.

There’s nothing impaled on the dead trees

except for the occassional empty heron’s nest

thrust through the icebound beaver pond

where we used to slow down to spot beavers

but it’s still humped by as many lodges as it ever was

and the road’s still not out of danger.

I’m much more of a stranger now

than I was then

to all these things that go on without us

as if they had never been cherished by us in passage

as roadside shrines along the way

like the collapsing one room schoolhouse

abandoned like the empty envelope

of a lost loveletter

that left nothing to say in return but the silence.

I’m out of place in this era of my life

I’m passing through like a ghost

with more answers about the afterlife of the outcome

that became of me and you

than there are sad questions to ask them

and my solitude is deepened

by a seance of one

and I’m so weary of wounded secrets

talking in their sleep about having no regrets

they survived everything

I’m praying like a dream with no luck

for a life I can wake up from.

The lightning-struck pines

we named the Three Sisters

no longer recognize me

and the gate on the cow-pasture

where they still stand

like stone-walled gorgons

is hanging by a hinge.

And the farm that was paradise awhile

before we jumped

where we lived among sunflowers

listening to the honeybees in the locust trees

and painting ten hours a day in the fields

for months at a time

further and further from home

until we got lost one night together in the woods

and were retroactively enlightened

by the dangers of finding our way back

like wary animals among animals;

the farm is a graveyard of backhoes now

and there are people in it

overliving us like a field gone back to bush.

I don’t grieve our separation.

I know all the hairs we split to go our separate ways.

You couldn’t be famous in my shadow

and I couldn’t be anonymous in yours.

There were no Sufis

whirling in a gust of weathervanes

when the weather turned against us.

Just the vertigo of not knowing what way to go

but knowing you must

or go under.

Everything was blind.

Everything was a sign.

I didn’t know if I could make it through

another new beginning

and younger

you couldn’t wait.

So I left the gate open

and one night you closed it behind you for good.

I wanted you to be the first to leave

because I knew more about the deserts to come

so for months after

I just sat there alone

like a dead lightbulb in a dry housewell

sucking on my phallic thumb

knowing there was nothing left to keep warm

and waiting for my new teeth to come in.

I practised the brutal discipline

of being me on my own

when I doubted I had the courage

to bluff my way through the changes

as the abyss put on flesh

and walked around as if it were me

trying on avatars that couldn’t save me

from the emptiness that embodied them.

I miss you sometimes

but less and less often over the years

though there’s still more iron than rust in my tears

and I try with better and better results

I still can’t quite forget

you put my heart like a rose through surgery

without an anaesthetic

and there are still dry petals of blood

you amputated like eyelids

snagged like tiny flags

you never honoured

furled around the thorns.

I still can’t lawyer my way

through the innocence of your atrocities

as if the moon had fallen on its own horns.

Maybe you were too crazy

to know what you were doing

and you couldn’t help yourself

as time and compassion would see it.

But whatever gets said or doesn’t

things were just as dead

when they went to your head

as they were when they tried to flee it.

And I wasn’t enough of an asylum to know why

my prophetic skull lied to me

like a bad alibi

everytime I excused my murder

in the name of your homocidal youth

as if unconditional love meant being martyred

by the loveless proof of the godless truth

you had made a mistake

and it was too late to correct the heretic

that went up in Renaissance flames

fed by Botticellian picture-frames

at the Bonfire of the Vanities.

You were a Napoleon airtight

that burned so hot

there was never any soot on your window.

My demons were martyred

for insanities they couldn’t conceive

ever believing in,

but you were true to your deceptions

and I was blacklisted by the secret police

that tormented your paranoid perfections

with false confessions I never made.

And that’s the way things have stayed

for the last twelve years on the record

like the striations of a retreating ice-age

that clawed at the rocks

to keep from flowing out of itself

like many weak threads from one strong rope

over the edge of the known universe

where the mindstream doesn’t need

a lonely lamp and light in the darkness

to follow its own course

back to the sea of night it sprang from.

But what’s saddest of all to me

driving through this used landscape

that used to be the way home

through all kinds of weather

remembering the innocence

of what we hoped for from each other and life

is knowing the abysmal disappointment that would follow

as if time didn’t flow

it just evaporated.

It’s demeaning to the spirit of life

to wish you knew then

what you say you know now

as if you always wanted to begin at the end

without ever crossing a threshold.

So I don’t wish for anything more

than what is given me moment by moment

knowing what can’t be taken away

is already forsaken

but that’s not a reason to repent,

that’s not a season of lament

that’s just the way things are.

There’s always a full moon

buried in every scar

like a harvest of starwheat

we leave for the birds

like ghosts in the garden to reap.

BLOOD YOUR ABSTRACTIONS

BLOOD YOUR ABSTRACTIONS

Blood your abstractions.

You think the ashes remember the fire?

Or that trees don’t give up their ghosts like blossoms?

Where does your fist go when you open your hand?

No fish can ever swim out of itself

or bird fly out of the sky.

You can’t pour the universe out of the universe

without opening wide.

The wisdom of the seers

is deeper than listening.

They hear the picture-music with their eyes.

And don’t think of the interstellar spaces within yourself

and all your inner stars

on the other side of the mirror

as some kind of gift-wrapped surprise.

They might wear their myths out in public

but naked

they bed with lies.

And that’s okay too

because true north doesn’t have a needle

that isn’t either a compass wide

or a star shy of indirection

and as Shakespeare said

by indirections we find directions out.

It’s the oldest way we have

of getting about the going

once we stand up to the fact

we’re perpetually lost

in the act of knowing

where we are.

And me?

I’m heading toward a star called Vega

in the constellation of Lyra

along with the rest of you unwilling pilgrims

who never break to the chase

without crippling yourself from the start

by believing nothing can prove faster than light.

I might suggest space.

I might suggest time

as nocturnal precursors of the light

or what was there to shine through

and even a thought or a feeling

you can’t run from

you can’t run to

can burn through the darkness

like comets and fireflies

long before they’re enlightened.

And you might come

from a long line of atrocities

but it’s the things you love the least

that are the most frightened of you.

And sometimes the moon gets caught

in the crossfire of her own triggers

and bares her claws in parentheses

like a lot that got left out of her alibi

as the story keeps changing

about who took the last shot.

I always perjure myself for the moon

hoping she doesn’t turn me in

for all the lies I’ve told on her behalf

that everyone believes is a new religion.

It’s a long-standing chronic habit of mine

to flatter my waters like the moon

but tell the truth

like the eye

of the sun at midnight

that shines in the darkest corners of the wine

as if everything were still true to the perilous youth

that once endangered the doorway he stood in

as a sign of things to come.

That’s when I realized

I could spend my whole life

witnessing the unreality of shapeshifting illusions

condemned to the drudgery

of sweeping phantom oases away like stars

off the stairs of my deserts

everytime the wind effaced

the cornerstones of my quicksand conclusions.

If you want to stay alive in those realms

it’s crucial to dig deeper than that

to taste the water

and know for yourself

whatever the desert thinks

whether it tastes of the joys of life

or the tears of a sphinx.

SHOULD I SPEAK OF THINGS BACKWARDS

SHOULD I SPEAK OF THINGS BACKWARDS

Should I speak of things backwards

as if the only things I could know and say

were always behind me

like starlight in my wake

or turn and look out into the abysmal darkness

not knowing what road to take

if the carpet will fly

if the theme I’m following

like my own shadow through time

will ever drop the veil from her face like Isis

and look into mine?

Stars evaporate in their own intensity like gods.

The spirit of the universe

is a shapeshifter

that never wears the same thing twice.

Every day shows up with a new face.

Every night’s a new lover in my place.

And the plot gets thicker and quicker

as the past asks the future

as if it read a lot of history

how things turned out

and the future asks the past

as if it were the watershed of the mystery

who came first and who came last

to the mindstream they both drink from.

Learning wisdom is learning space.

And it’s a big place.

UNSPOOLING

UNSPOOLING

Unspooling.

As if my spine were a thread.

A triple helix.

The fingerprint of an anthropod.

Theseus in the labyrinth

making classical references to bulls.

Horns on the skull of a god.

No emergency exits.

Regard the dead parachutes of Babylon.

No one can understand you.

Probably right.

Something I have in common

with the darker freaks of the light.

Sunspots and eclipses.

Voids in the cosmic net

that lets everything through.

Where the stars don’t grow.

Where there’s no one left to kill

on desolation row

and no Lymon alpha blobs

embryo into baby galaxies.

Only lowly orphans are born

in the dead air of that womb.

The irisless ace of a shark’s eye.

I can hear dark matter

when it cries the light out

taking the shapes of things

no one can see.

God said Let there be light.

And that was the end of me.

Now I’ve got nerves of black lightning

tatooing constellations on my back

with a blackhole that doesn’have the eyes

to read a starmap backwards.

You said you loved me in the past.

But I thought you were only confessing.

And still you say you’ll love me forever.

But now I know you’re guessing.

I abide in the shadows of a deranged blessing

not knowing which is worse,

a flawed beatitude

or the perfect curse.
